Several plays were interrupted by on-stage protests from overseas environmental
activists. They climbed onto the stage and shouted, "There is no theater on a dead planet." "There is no theater on a dead planet."
We are now facing the shocking reality that,
in order to prevent being unable to perform
tomorrow due to the climate crisis,
today's performances had to be halted.
As the climate crisis deepens, society's view on emitting greenhouse gases while enjoying ourselves becomes less favorable. However, is there any reason for Homo Ludens to live on a planet without joy? Homo Ludens means 'the playful human' or 'the human who enjoys.' Humanity has always sought joy. For Homo Ludens, playing is also a matter of survival, as it is through arts, sports, and travel that we pursue our humanity! Therefore, what we need to do is not stop the performances, but work hard to keep them going. The Climate Crisis of Homo Ludens is a carbon-neutrality initiative in the arts,
sports, and travel sectors proposed by the Research Institute for Climate and Society, a non-profit private research organization.
It explores practical ways to achieve carbon neutrality in non-productive sectors like arts, sports, and travel—areas that most citizens engage in as leisure or hobbies. As an open initiative, it welcomes any organization or group that shares its vision and goals to join in and participate.
