Cognitive biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela argued that “we do not see the space of the world; we experience our field of vision,” emphasizing the integration of diverse perspectives. What we come to know and understand is limited to the aspects that appear to us in concrete form. Artists Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho have long explored this tension—the persistent challenge and inquiry into the unknowable and the seemingly impossible. This exhibition was conceived as an attempt to newly observe climate and environmental issues from multiple angles and to explore the possibilities of alternative futures. Phantom Garden begins with an imagined narrative set on Earth after the extinction of humanity, where a mysterious new lifeform visits the planet and traces the remnants of human presence and its environment. Rather than focusing on humans—who once stood at the top of the food chain—the artists turn their attention to plants, which primarily played the role of producers within the ecological system. In Phantom Garden, highly intelligent lifeforms investigate and reconstruct the world of plants much like archaeologists, translating this process into geometric and abstract imagery within the XR-Lab space.(the rest omitted).
