The Wimbledon Championships, one of the four major tennis tournaments in the world, is held in the UK for just two weeks each year, yet it draws around 500,000 spectators—about one-sixth the number of a FIFA World Cup. However, Wimbledon’s carbon emissions last year were only 35,894 tons, just one-hundredth of the World Cup’s. This is thanks to a range of carbon-reduction efforts, including the installation of solar panels on the main stadium roof to generate electricity, composting food waste discarded by spectators, and creating an eco-friendly environment using plants throughout the venue.
