The guidelines for sustainable theatre were created by Renew Culture, which was co-founded by Lisa Burger, former joint CEO of the National Theatre in the UK, and director Paddy Dillon, in collaboration with the consulting firm Buro Happold. Over 30 organizations, including the European Theatre Convention, the National Theatre, and Julie’s Bicycle, came together in support of this initiative. The first version was released in 2021, and the second version was published in June 2024.
The Theatre Green Book is divided into sections such as Production, Buildings, and Operations.
A voluntary group of Korean performing arts producers and directors called ‘From Today [ ]’—including Kim Bo-ram, Park Ji-sun, Baek Kyo-hee, Song Mi-sun, Lee Hye-won, and Jeon Kang-hee—translated the guidelines into Korean and began sharing the Korean version of Sustainable Production in November 2022. In January 2024, they updated the translation and toolkit links for Sustainable Production, and also released the Korean versions of Sustainable Buildings and Sustainable Operations.
