This research project is part of our institute’s launched initiative, “Homo Ludens’ Climate Crisis.” It was designed to identify and investigate outstanding carbon-neutral case studies in the fields of arts, sports, and travel.
The Homo Ludens’ Climate Crisis initiative is based on the understanding that the arts, sports, and travel sectors are not merely discretionary activities that contribute to unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions, but essential parts of human life. It was established to explore carbon-neutral practices within these largely non-productive areas—considered leisure or hobbies by most people. Ultimately, the initiative aims to promote greenhouse gas reduction and climate adaptation in the arts, sports, and travel sectors, and to leverage this soft power to invigorate climate action across society as a whole.
In this research project, seven exemplary domestic cases of carbon reduction and climate adaptation were selected in the fields of arts (performances, exhibitions, etc.) and travel (tourist attractions, local festivals). Based on interviews with stakeholders, detailed activities were introduced. Six young members of the climate youth group Big Wave, which has been collaborating with the Climate Society Research Institute for five years, participated in the study. The results of the case studies were compiled into the easily accessible “Homo Ludens’ Climate Crisis Irregular Magazine.” The seven cases featured in the magazine are as follows:
