The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 29) designated tourism as a special theme for the first time in the history of the conference. It hosted the inaugural ministerial meeting and related events focused on this topic. Ministers from various countries, including the conference chair, acknowledged the interconnected impacts of climate change and tourism. By incorporating climate action in the tourism sector into the COP 29 Climate Action Agenda, they aim to develop tourism policies that support national climate goals. In addition to the ministerial meeting, a high-level roundtable was held, addressing topics such as measurement, decarbonization, regeneration, adaptation, finance, and innovative solutions.
The COP 29 held in Baku concluded with a series of pledges and declarations made through extensive discussions among participating countries, published under the title “In Solidarity for a Green World: COP 29 Declarations and Pledges Letter.” Commonly known as the Baku Declaration or the COP 29 Declaration, this document includes commitments from 50 countries and 8 non-state actors to join international collaborative efforts to strengthen climate action in the tourism sector. This commitment is detailed in the ninth annex of the Baku Declaration, titled “Declaration on Enhanced Action in Tourism.”
For reference, the Baku Declaration includes a total of eight pledges and declarations, one of which is the “Declaration on Enhanced Action in Tourism,” emphasizing the need to incorporate the tourism sector into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for effective management.
